Can you ban a breed of dogs?

A proposed ban on pit bull breeds in another state has California dog bite attorneys wondering about the effectiveness and practicality of a ban like this, and whether it would help reduce pit bull attacks at all.  The state of Texas is mulling a ban on pit bull breeds, and as predicted, this has triggered an enormous debate in that state with pit bull owners on one side, and victims of dog bites on the other. The proposal stems from a fatal dog bite involving 10-year-old Justin Clinton in Texas. In 2009, the boy was attacked by two pit bulls. He sustained serious injuries, and died.

California dog bite lawyers have been concerned about a new study that indicates an increase in hospital visits related to dog bites. According to the study, the number of people requiring hospital visits because of dog bites in the US rose from 5,100 in 1993 to 9,500 in 2008. That makes it an 86.3% increase in dog bite-related hospital stays.

A number of recent dog bite attacks involving both people and animals in Ventura has concerned California dog bite attorneys and residents of the city. Dog Bite Statistics are showing an increase in dog bite claims. According to the Insurance Information Institute, nationwide, there was an increase in dog bite claims from 2008 to 2009.  The number of claims increased to 16,586 claims in 2009.  There were about 6.4% more dog bite claims filed in 2009, than in 2008.  In fact, 2009 was the third straight year in a row that there was an increase in such claims.

Deadly Concord Dog Attack, Leaves Owner Arrested and 3 Pit Bulls Euthanized

3 pit bulls were euthanized after this deadly attack.

A man has been arrested and three dogs have been euthanized after the fatal mauling of a two-year-old child in Concord last week.  The man was the step-grandfather of the two-year child.  The attack involved the family’s three pit bulls.  The child was apparently attacked when he walked into the garage, where the dogs were kept.  There’s no information yet on why the dogs attacked, but the animals severely mauled the child.  He sustained fatal injuries.

Marion County Woman Recovers $650,000 in Dog Attack Settlement

A Marin County woman, who suffered serious shoulder injuries and head injuries after being knocked over by a couple of dogs, has recovered $650,000.

The incident occurred in October 2008, when the victim was at a park. As she was walking, she came upon two dogs, a Great Pyrenees and a Labrador that were playing off leash. The two dogs crossed the victim’s path and the Great Pyrenees knocked her onto the ground. She hit her head on the concrete and suffered head injuries. She also suffered rotator cuff injuries, post concussion syndrome and mild traumatic brain injury.
