Dorel Defective Car Seat Recall

February 23rd, 2011
Defective Car Seat

Make sure you do not have a defective car seat!

In spite of a greater push for chidlren’s product safety over the past years, it may be too early for California product liability attorneys and parents to exhale. Car seat maker Dorel has announced a massive recall of more than 800,000 car seats because of the possibility that these harnesses could come loose and even release. In such cases, the child could be in danger of being injured in an accident because of the defective car seat.

According to Dorel, the problem lies with a faulty locking and release button. These car seats were manufactured by Dorel Consumer Group between May 1, 2008 and April 30, 2009. The products include infant, booster and convertible car seats. These car seats are marketed under the names of Costco, Maxi-Cosi and Safety First. According to the company, the defective button could cause the harness to come loose and even come off. In such situations, the child has no protection and no security. In the event of an accident, a child in a defective car seat like this could be at a high risk of injury or even fatality.
According to the company, it will provide for repairs of the defective car seat. The company says it will provide consumers with a tube of non-toxic lubricant. Consumers will have to apply the lube to the locking mechanism. The company will also send along a label indicating that the repair has been completed. Until then however, consumers can continue to use the car seat, but must make sure that the lock-release button is in the locked position. Here’s a complete list of all the child car seats that are affected by the recall.
