Young Bay Area Bicyclists at High Risk of Accident

Young bike riders have the highest risk of accidents in the Bay Area.

Young bicyclists in the Bay Area in the 10 – 19 age group were involved in more traffic accidents between 2005 and 2009, than bicyclists of any other age group.  During this period of time, more than 3,200 bicyclists of this age group were involved in collisions.  That information comes from a California Highway Patrol review of bicycle accident data.  Out of these accidents, half of those involved boys between the age of 12 and 16.

A teenage bicyclist was injured this week in an accident in Norwalk, Los Angeles County.  Accidents like this are likely to be more common in the weeks ahead, as more numbers of young children take to their bikes.

When can motorists and cyclists share the road?

A bicyclist, who had suffered serious injuries in an accident in Tustin, California last year, has succumbed to his injuries.  The 22-year-old bicyclist had suffered critical injuries in the accident, and had spent more than four months in a coma.  The accident occurred on November 17 last year.  The bicyclist had been riding a bike lane at about 7:30 in the evening when he was struck by a Ford Mustang.  He was left with critical injuries.

A motorist in Torrance, California who has been arrested after a bicycle accident last week, has a history of driving offenses, including speeding.  The woman, 19-year-old Jaclyn Andrea Garcia was driving in the Hollywood Riviera section, when she crashed into a group of bicyclists.  There were about 10 to 12 bicyclists in the group.  Two bicyclists were injured, and one of them suffered critical injuries.

It’s an increasingly dangerous world for bicyclists in San Francisco, as a new study shows.  According to data, bicycle accidents in San Francisco have grown by 8% over the past two years.  In fact, the accident rate in San Francisco has increased at a higher rate than the rate of ridership in the city.  During the same period of time, bicycle ridership in San Francisco grew by only 3%.

Traffic Accident Fault Falls on Bicyclist in Los Altos

Bicyclist causes major accident.

The California Highway Patrol has found that a traffic accident fault belonged to a Los Altos nurse and mother who was killed in a fatal tractor-trailer accident in November. The victim was traveling on Alpine Road in the same direction of the truck when the accident occurred. The victim was run over by the truck, and sustained fatal injuries. According to official estimates, the speed of the truck was between eight and 10 mph at the time of the accident. The CHP report finds that the cyclist, for unknown reasons, turned right into the path of the truck.

The city of Los Angeles is preparing to make life a little safer for Los Angeles bicyclists. The Public Safety and Transportation Committees have directed their attorneys to prepare an ordinance that would make cyclist harassment a civil violation. The violation would be accompanied by a fine of up to $1,000.

Bicyclist Killed in Agoura Hills AccidentA female motorist in Agoura Hills has been arrested after she was involved fatal bicycle accident that killed a man over the weekend.  The Agoura Hills accident occurred on Saturday afternoon. The bicyclist, James Laing was riding his bike on Agoura Road, when he was struck by a car being driven by a female motorist.  Laing was thrown off his bicycle, and suffered fatal injuries in the accident. He was declared dead at the scene.
