Short-haul carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines has been fined $425,000 by the Federal Aviation Administration.  Investigations by the agency had confirmed that the airline had failed to inspect aircraft that had been hit by lightning.

Even as more incidents of air traffic controllers dozing off on duty come to light, the Federal Aviation Administration has vowed that it will take a strong stand against air traffic controller fatigue.  According to Federal Aviation Administration administrator Randy Babbitt, his agency will not tolerate sleeping on the job.  His announcement came as two more air traffic controllers were suspended for dozing off on the job.  That makes it four air traffic controllers caught sleeping on the job over the past month alone.

Federal Aviation Administration hopes to lower the plane crash rate.

Southern California will be the venue of a workshop by the Federal Aviation Administration, aimed at reducing plane crash rates.  The workshops are part of a nationwide campaign conducted by the federal aviation safety agency to reduce aviation safety incidents.  Some of the first workshops are being held in Southern California.  Private pilots, pilot instructors, mechanics and others interested in aviation safety will be participating in the workshops.

Southwest Airlines Plane Makes Emergency Landing Due to Cracked Fuselage

No serious injuries were reported after a Southwest Airlines plane on its way to Sacramento, California, made an emergency landing at a military base, after the fuselage of the plane cracked.  The Boeing 737 plane flight had just taken off from Phoenix, when passengers heard a gunshot-like sound, and the oxygen masks dropped.

Federal investigators will soon begin the process of probing the deadly plane crash at Long Beach Airport yesterday that killed five people.  The charred remains of the plane, a twin-engine private plane, have been removed from the Long Beach Airport where it crashed yesterday. The wreckage will be sent to a facility near Palmdale, where federal investigators will begin examining it.
