Carpooling Parents Less Likely to Use Booster Seats For Children

Using booster seats substantially reduces a child's risk of being killed or seriously injured in an accident.

Using booster seats for children substantially reduces a child’s risk of being killed or seriously injured in an accident.  However, a study finds that parents, who normally restrain their children in booster seats in their own cars, are much less likely to insist on such practices when they are part of a carpool.

The results of the study have been published in the latest edition of the journal Pediatrics.  The study was conducted by researchers at the University Of Michigan.  According to the study, about 30% of parents do not enforce rules about booster seat use when their children were being picked up or dropped off by other parents in the car pool.  The researchers also found that approximately 45% of the parents did not require that their child use a booster seat when they were traveling with other children who were also not restrained in a booster seat.

Most of the parents in the study reported that they used booster seats when they traveled in their car with their children.  That fact is very encouraging to San Diego car accident lawyers.  However, when it came to carpooling with other families, these parents were not as likely to follow booster seat rules as stringently.  That is definitely a matter of concern when you consider that approximately 70% of parents carpool.

There are a number of practical reasons why parents do not seem to follow booster rules as stringently when they are part of a carpool.  The number one reason is lack of time.  In many carpooling groups, parents are picking up and dropping off children from school and after school activities, and time is a constraint.  Other times, the car is over crowded making it hard to use booster seats for each child.   Additionally, when you are in charge of several children, all in varying moods, it’s probably a lot more tempting to dispense with booster formalities altogether.

No matter what the reason, failure to restrain a child properly is extremely dangerous.  San Diego car accident lawyers warn that a child’s risk of being injured in an accident significantly increases when he or she is not restrained properly in a booster seat.  A child below the age of eight must be restrained in a booster seat in the state of California.

There were other surprising and alarming findings in the study.  According to the researchers, about 50 % of the parents surveyed were not aware of the age limit on booster seats in their state.  Another 20% of the parents in the study guessed the age limit  incorrectly.
