Another Caltrans Worker Critically Injured on the Job

Look out for workers!

There’s been yet another California Department Of Transportation worker injured on the job, just a few days after the agency kicked off an awareness campaign asking motorists to slow down when they see highway workers.  The California Department Of Transportation worker has been left with critical injuries in the accident.

According to the agency, the accident involved an intoxicated driver who drove recklessly down a closed highway entrance ramp in Riverside.  The resulting accident left the worker critically injured.  The California Department of Transportation is rightly angered at the scant attention being paid to the safety of highway workers.  The fifty-two-year-old worker is still in the hospital, while the motorist involved in the crash has been arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and DUI.

The California Department of Transportation has confirmed that the on-ramp was closed for construction.  There were plenty of signs and concrete barriers marking the closure.  Some construction crews did honk their horns to warn the driver about the ramp, but she did not pay attention.

This is the most recent serious accident involving highway workers in California.  Over the past couple of months, there have been at least three fatal accidents involving California Department of Transportation workers.  The first accident occurred near San Diego in May, while two other highway workers were killed in separate accidents in June.

The California Department of Transportation, Los Angeles car accident lawyers and highway construction workers across the state have been very concerned about these deaths.  The California Department of Transportation has kicked off a statewide safety awareness campaign that encourages motorists to look out for highway workers.  The campaign includes messages being displayed on freeways, encouraging motorists to look out for workers.

Highway workers are also now focusing on keeping themselves safe by arranging equipment to protect them from any accidents or injuries, but the responsibility is on drivers to exercise caution when they see highway workers.  The Department Of Transportation also wants drivers to obey all traffic laws.  In general, when you enter a highway work zone, slow down speeds immediately, and maintain low speeds till you are safely out of the zone.  Do not stop your car to look at construction worker equipment lying around.  Switch off all cell phones when you enter a highway work zone, and keep them switched off till you are safely out of the zone.  Watch out for highway workers, construction equipment, construction debris and all obstacles.

The decline in California car accident fatalities in recent years can be attributed at least in part to safer highways.  Highway construction workers work tirelessly to maintain highways, and keep them safe for California motorists.  The least drivers can do is to look out for them and keep their safety in mind.
