Caltrans Launches New Safety Campaign to Prevent Work Zone Accidents

Work Zone Accident

Highway maintenance workers are constantly at risk from motorists

The California Department of Transportation has launched a new work zone accident prevention campaign aimed at encouraging motorists to pull over when they enter a work zone.  The campaign comes in response to a number of recent fatal accidents involving highway workers and cars.

The campaign is being sponsored jointly by the Office of Traffic Safety, the California Highway Patrol and the Department Of Motor Vehicles.  It’s called “Move over It’s the Law” campaign, and as part of the campaign, the California Department of Transportation will use more than 700 electronic highway signs to warn drivers to slow down when they see highway workers.  The “Move over It’s the Law” campaign is named after the Move over Law which went into effect in 2007.

The campaign will also use social media platforms, like Facebook and Twitter to reach more drivers and educate them about the need to slow down speeds when they enter work zones.  The Move over Message will also be flashed on billboards, and will also be contained in public service announcements on television.  Additionally, the California Highway Patrol will report the message during its daily traffic updates in the morning.  The California Highway Patrol officers will also be closely looking out for motorists who break the law when they enter a work zone.

The need for safety measures to protect highway workers has become even more intense over the past few months after several accidents involving Caltrans workers.  There’ve been at least three California Department of Transportation workers killed in accidents since May alone.  On May 1, a highway maintenance worker was killed in San Diego in an accident, while on June 7, another death was reported in Imperial Valley.  The third and last death occurred on June 20 in San Diego.

Highway maintenance workers and other construction workers are aware that their job is dangerous, and that they’re constantly at risk from motorists who fail to slow down speeds and look out for them.  However, even for these workers and Los Angeles car accident lawyers, the high fatality toll involving highway workers over the last few months has been shocking.

Since these accidents, the California Department of Transportation has been forced to examine its own internal policies and procedures to see what enhancements could be made to enhance worker safety.  However, the California Department of Transportation also wants to involve the public in becoming more aware about the need to slow down when they see highway workers.

Highway crews do a tremendous job of keeping California’s highways safer for motorists to use.  Unfortunately, their safety is often at risk from motorists who are speeding, distracted, or worse, driving under influence of alcohol.  It’s important for drivers to understand that these workers deserve to be able to do their jobs safely and return home safely everyday.
