California Company Recalls Tankless Water Heaters Due to Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Risk

There has been a recall of tankless water heaters that have been known to been causing carbon monoxide poisoning

A California-based company has announced a recall of instantaneous or tankless water heaters, due to a defect that could increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.  The company is Irvine-based Navien America Inc., which is recalling about 13,000 heaters.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that there is an unstable connection in the water heater that can cause the collar to detach from pressure.  This detached collar can pose a serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.  So far, there have been no injuries or illnesses reported as a result of this defect.   The tankless water heaters that are included in the recall come in white with ‘Navien’ printed in front.  The model numbers that are included the recall are the CR-180(A), CR-210(A), CR-240(A), CC-180(A), CC-210(A) and CC-240(A) .

The tankless water heaters were sold between February 2008 and March 2009.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission is advising consumers to stop using these immediately.  Consumers are advised to check the model number and manufacture year information on the water heater.  The heaters that are included in the recall were manufactured in 2008.  Persons who own the tankless water heaters are advised to contact the company for free repairs.  The company will replace all nylon vent collars.

Those consumers, who want to continue using the water heaters while they wait for repairs, must have a carbon monoxide detector or alarm that has been installed in the home.  These alarms must be specially fixed near the sleeping areas of the home.

Regardless of whether you have a tankless water heater manufactured by this company or not, you must have a carbon monoxide detector alarm in your home.  Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas that is released from the operations of heaters, gas powered tools, motor vehicles and cooking equipment.  Exposures to high concentrations of carbon monoxide of over 100 ppm can be fatal.  Because the gas is odorless and colorless, persons may not be aware that they’ve inhaled carbon monoxide fumes until it is too late.  In many cases that San Diego personal injury lawyers come across, persons have been killed in their sleep after inhaling the noxious fumes.

Symptoms of mild carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, vertigo, confusion and dizziness.  However, in the case of a more severe exposure to carbon monoxide, the person may suffer damage to the central nervous system, and could even die.  Pregnant women who are exposed to carbon monoxide may also suffer damage to the fetus.  Carbon monoxide exposure does not have to be at high concentrations to be dangerous.  Even low concentrations of carbon monoxide can have a dangerous effect if the exposure is chronic and continuous.  Chronic exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide can lead to confusion, disorientation, depression and memory loss.  It can also interfere with the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, ultimately leading to hypoxia.
