California Company Recalls Avocado Due to Listeria Poisoning Risks

September 20th, 2011
Avocado products are believed to be contaminated with listeria

The avocado products are being recalled because they might be contaminated with Listeria.

An Ontario, California-based company is recalling thousands of cases of avocado products because of fears of Listeria poisoning risks.  The company, Fine Mexican Food Products Inc. says that there have been no reports of food poisoning caused by the contamination.

According to Fine Mexican Food Products Inc., the recall includes 1,423 cases of 12 1/2 pounds Frozen Avocado Pulp and 1,820 cases of IQF 8/3 pounds IQ Avocado halves.  These products were distributed since June 2010.  The reason for the recall is suspected contamination by the deadly Listeria monocytogenes organism.

These products were packed in 2.2 pound per bag/ twelve bags per shipping carton and a product code of 00115 for Frozen Avocado Pulp, and 3 pounds per bag/8 bags per shipping carton and product code of 00134 for IQF Avocado Harvest.  The expiry date for these products is June/July/August 2012.

Listeria poisoning is caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacterium.  According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 2,500 people every year contract listeria poisoning, or listeriosis.  An estimated 500 people die every year from Listeria poisoning.

Symptoms of Listeria poisoning differ slightly from those seen in other food borne illnesses.  The most common symptoms are fever and muscle aches.  Diarrhea and vomiting may also be seen in some cases.  Once the infection begins to spread to the central nervous system, the patient may suffer other symptoms like headaches, and neck pain.  Confusion and disorientation may set in, and the patient may begin to suffer from seizures and convulsions.

Some people are more susceptible to Listeria food poisoning than others.  For instance, Los Angeles food poisoning lawyers find that most patients who have contracted Listeria poisoning are people with weakened immune systems like children, the elderly and persons who have just recovered from a major illness or surgery.  Pregnant women are also more susceptible to listeriosis.  People who suffer from liver disease, diabetes, cancer and end-stage renal disease are more susceptible to listeriosis.

Listeria monocytogenes is found in the soil and water.  It is also found in some animals including cows, and can be traced to certain animal products, like raw milk and dairy products.  Unlike many other types of organisms, Listeria can continue to grow and thrive even in the freezing temperatures of a refrigerator.  However, cooking at high temperatures and pasteurization can eliminate Listeria poisoning risks.  Other sources are foods like raw sprouts, ready-to-eat hot dogs, refrigerated meat spreads, and cheese made from nonpasteurized milk.

In order to prevent listeriosis, thoroughly cook meat and other animal foods, and make sure that you consume only pasteurized milk and dairy products.  Even poultry and seafood must be cooked at high temperatures.  Make sure that you wash all knives and chopping boards used for cooking foods.  Produce must be washed thoroughly in running water.
