CPSC Warns about Fire, Burn Risks from Ceramic Firepots

Burn Risks from Ceramic Firepots

Ceramic firepots can cause a nasty burn!

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning about fire and burn injury risks from ceramic firepots.  Los Angeles burn injury attorneys would be especially concerned about these risks, because it’s summer, and more people will be using these firepots.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission warning comes after two serious burry incidents in New York involving the use of these ceramic firepots.  In one incident, a 14-year-old boy from Long Island suffered serious burns when he poured some gel fuel from a bottle into a firepot.  The boy had been asked to light up the fire pot, and he did so.  When the pot did not catch fire, he added more gel fuel into the pot.  The pot exploded, covering him with a slathering of gel that stuck his body like napalm.  He has sustained serious burn injuries, and is in a critical condition at a New York hospital.

The other incident involved a young man in his 20s who tried to light a ceramic fire pot on his patio.  The pot exploded into his face.  This man has suffered serious burn injuries, and is looking at weeks of rehabilitation and therapy.

At least part of the problem seems to lie in the fact that there is no wick in these firepots.  People who are lighting these don’t even know whether the firepot has been lit.  More importantly, these firepots don’t come with a warning label saying that they involve a potential fire hazard.

Both the New York burn accidents involved firepots that were manufactured by a company called Napa Garden and Home Inc.  The products were sold at Bed Bath and Beyond.  Napa Garden and Home Inc. has already asked Bed Bath and Beyond to pull these products from store shelves, while the company works at adding appropriate warning labels to these.  Across the country, Bed Bath and Beyond is now no longer selling these products.

The ceramic firepot packaging mentions that the product is safe, although the company now says that the word “safe” was only inserted there to mean that there would be no toxic byproducts released to the environment.  According to the company, the packaging does contain a warning label, but the label consists of a tiny sticker on the packaging, which can be thrown away.  It’s very likely that many consumers don’t know how dangerous these firepots can be.

These products are relatively new to the market place, and not many people are aware of the safe way to use these.  However, a strong warning label on the packaging of the product would go a long way in alerting consumers to the need for caution when using these firepots.  Besides, the company needs to make changes to the design of the firepots to indicate when these are lit.
