Researchers Announce Breakthrough in Spinal Cord Injury Treatment

A new treatment for spinal cord injuries has had some major breakthroughs.

Researchers at the University of Louisville in Kentucky have announced a remarkable breakthrough in the treatment of spinal cord injuries.  A young man, who had been left a paraplegic after an auto accident, has been able to stand on his own without any devices helping him.

This former paraplegic was Rob Summers. He was part of a group of patients involved in experimental research at the University of Louisville.  Summers was implanted with a device containing 16 electrodes.  The device was implanted in his spine, just below the site of the damage.  When switched on, the device delivers signals that excite the neurons in the area.

Through exhaustive practice, Summers has been able to move his legs, feet and toes.  Over the past four years, Summers has been unable to move his lower limbs, and not surprisingly, this was a major breakthrough for him.  It is also great news for California spinal cord injury lawyers and spinal cord injury victims around the country who are waiting for a cure.

However, the researchers are advising caution.  As of now, Summers is not able to walk without aid, and when the device is switched off, he’s not capable of movement at all.  It may be some time before the device is enhanced enough to enable walking on his own without any support.  However, the fact that there has been a remarkable first step is great news.
