Brain Injury in Kids May Lead to Headaches for Months after

Brain Injury in Kids

The researchers monitored more than 400 children who had suffered a brain injury that required treatment in an emergency room

Brain injury in kids may be the reason to suffer from headaches for months after the injury.  These children are more likely to suffer headaches for as long as a year after the injury compared to those children who suffer body injuries.  Those results are not exactly surprising to San Diego brain injury lawyers, but they do confirm the complexity involved in treating brain injuries in children.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Seattle Children’s Research Institute.  The researchers monitored more than 400 children who had suffered a brain injury that required treatment in an emergency room.  Overall, 402 children in the study suffered from a mild injury, and 60 children had a moderate or severe brain injury.  Most of these brain injuries were caused in accidents due to sports, slip and fall accidents as well as car accidents.  Researchers compared the injuries in these children to those children who were taken to the emergency room suffering arm injuries.

Parents and caregivers of children with brain injuries were required to keep a record of any headaches reported by the children over a period of time.  The results were not so surprising.  After the first 3 months, 43 out of every 100 children who experienced a mild brain injury continued to suffer headaches.  37 out of every 100 children who had suffered severe or moderate brain injuries continued to report headaches after 3 months.  However, in comparison, 26 out of every 100 children who had experienced an arm injury, suffered headaches after 3 months.  Girls seem to be at an especially high risk of suffering headaches after a brain injury.

San Diego brain injury lawyers are not exactly surprised by those results, but they do indicate the continued suffering for children who have a brain injury.  Headaches can severely impact a child’s ability to perform well in school, and affect his studies.  Children who suffer persistent headaches because of a brain injury are more likely to drop out of sports, music classes and other recreational activities that could trigger headaches.

Researchers say that they are not surprised that children suffer headaches for months after a brain injury.  However, they are at a loss to explain the gender divide in headaches after a brain injury.  It may have something to do with the fact that women are at a higher risk of migraines than men, because of hormonal factors.  These hormonal factors also possibly impact the appearance of headaches after a brain injury.  The disparity in headaches between boys and girls could also have something to do with the way male and female brains develop.
