Boxer Arrested in Costa Mesa for Hit and Run Car Accident

July 16th, 2008

Apparently Mr. Quentin Jackson takes his nickname a tad too seriously. The boxer nicknamed “Rampage” for his aggressive boxing in the ring, played out rampage of a different kind on the street on Tuesday, as his truck plowed into several vehicles on a Cost Mesa street. The 30-year-old Irvine resident was ultimately arrested following the car accident, but only after he managed to crash into other cars resulting in a prolonged police chase and a dramatic confrontation when cops had their guns drawn and pointed at the boxer sprawled on the ground.

According the Orange County Register, the series of car accidents occurred when Jackson slammed his car into two other cars near the intersection of the 55 freeway and 19th street. After the collision, the boxer in his pickup went driving on, and crashed into another car on 17th. That was not all. Jackson, according to witnesses swerved back up against the center divider, and at one point, even drove up onto the sidewalk, frightening pedestrians who were using the side walk. By this time, police officers were chasing Jackson, and the boxer continued to drive on a rim after one of his tires blew out.

He continued until reaching the Balboa Peninsula where he was arrested. At the time of his arrest, there was a trail of smashed cars, and shredded tires. The chase lasted for five minutes. You can’t really say it was a dramatic surprise that Jackson was arrested –after all, the man was driving a pick up that had a life size poster of him plastered on the side!

Jackson has been booked on suspicion of hit and run driving, reckless driving and felony evading.

So far, there has been no indication that alcohol and drugs could have played a part in the car accident, although you find it hard to believe that a perfectly sane and completely-in-his-senses person could have been driving as recklessly as Jackson was. Also, given the fact that the man was fleeing from the cops in a pickup truck that just happened to have his poster plastered on it, it’s easy to believe that he wasn’t really functioning to the fullest extent of his faculties. Why would you keep running from the police, when your life sized poster clearly announces to the world that you’re the one driving the car? We understand as a boxer you do take plenty of punches to the head, but this is ridiculous.

Road rage could definitely have been a factor. Jackson was UFC lightweight champion until recently, when he lost his title earlier this month. Frustration does strange things to people.

Jackson could have avoided considerable damage if he had done the right thing – merely pulled over the first time he hit a car and faced up to his actions. Instead he decided to flee the scene of the car accident in a completely mindless manner, causing more destruction and damage as he drove on.

It’s hard to know what was going on in Jackson’s head at the time of the car accident. As of now, sports and gossip commentators are going to town with the story of the fugitive-who-fled-in-a-pick-up-with-his-picture-on-it, but as the giggles subside, we’re going to have to account for this man’s lunatic behavior, and the damage it’s caused.
