FDA Studies Link Yaz Birth Control Pills to High Risk of Blood Clots

The Food and Drug Administration has stopped short of completely confirming a link between Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals’ Yaz birth control pills, but has said that a preliminary review of data seems to indicate a high risk of blood clots from the use of these pills.  Los Angeles personal injury lawyers are investigating cases filed by women who developed severe side effects, including pulmonary embolism after using the pills.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, at this point in time, it is unable to confirm that there’s a link between blood clots and Yasmin use, but there’s enough data for the agency to be concerned about this risk.  Thousands of women across the country use Yaz and Yasmin contraceptive pills.  Yasmin was manufactured by Berlex Labs, and was introduced in 2001.  Berlex Labs has since been taken over by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals.   The complaints linking Yasmin use to a number of side effects soon began to trickle in.  Women began reporting unusually heavy periods, palpitations, and anxiety.

Since then, doctors have managed to identify specific side effects associated with use of Yaz and Yasmin pills.  The side effects include pulmonary embolism, and blood clots.  Women may suffer from lumps in the breast, deep vein thrombosis, strokes and heart attacks.  Other side effects include kidney disorders, liver damage, heart attacks and even gall bladder disorders.

Both Yaz and Yasmin contain drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, which is a form of estrogen.  The only difference between these two pills is the amount of ethinyl estradiol that they contain.  Yaz comes with about 20 mcg of ethinyl estradiol, compared to Yasmin with 30 mcg of ethinyl estradiol.  However, similar side effects have been seen with the use of both types of pills.

Now, the Food and Drug Administration says that preliminary analysis of data involving more than 500,000 women in the United States, seems to show an increased risk of blood clots from the use of these contraceptive pills.  Specifically, the agency says that there is an increased risk of blood clots in newer contraceptive pills that contain drospirenone.  The agency has confirmed that it will convene two panels in December in order to further probe the safety data on these pills.  The Food and Drug Administration is also warning about increased blood clot risks in other contraceptive pills in the market that contain drospirenone, including generic versions.  There are several such versions available in the market.

Concerns about the clot risks from Yaz and Yasmin use are not new.  Los Angeles personal injury lawyers have been warning about these for years now.  Consumer safety group Public Citizen has been alerting the public to the dangers of these contraceptive for a while.
