Modesto Bicyclist Likely Victim of Distracted Driving Accident

Distracted Driving

A bicyclist has been killed in a pickup truck accident in Modesto.  According to preliminary investigations, the cause of the accident was distracted driving.

The 48-year-old bicyclist was struck as he was bicycling across the road.  Police have not given out more information about what kind of distracted driving caused this crash.  Law-enforcement officers often find it tricky to determine if distracted driving was involved in an accident, because drivers don’t come out and admit that they have been texting or snacking at the wheel at the time of the accident.

There’s a mountain of evidence to indicate that distracted driving dramatically increases a person’s risk of being involved in an accident.  In fact, to law-enforcement officers, distracted driving is this generation’s equivalent of drunk driving.  Drunk driving accident fatalities across California have declined steadily over the past five years.  That doesn’t mean that Los Angeles car accident lawyers don’t need to worry anymore about accidents caused by impaired drivers.  However, there is very little acceptance of intoxicated driving in 2011.  Few people would tolerate people driving under the influence because of the risks of accidents.

However, when it comes to distracted driving, there is large-scale societal acceptance of this practice.  In fact, this attitude towards distracted driving is one of the reasons why we have not been able to make as much progress as necessary towards preventing distracted driving.

California has laws that ban the use of cell handheld cell phones while driving and texting while driving.  However, the laws have had minimal impact because most people don’t see texting while driving as particularly dangerous or unhealthy.  These behaviors are especially widespread among young and teenage motorists.  Teens being some of the highest uses of technology are at a much higher risk of being involved in distracted driving accidents.

The growing popularity of smart phones has only increased the risks from distracted driving.  Cell phones earlier were only used to send or receive text messages and have conversations.  Now, they are used to access the Internet, read mail, surf the web, make restaurant reservations, and update statuses on social networking sites.  An increasing number of people now access the Net on their mobile devices as opposed to their laptops or their personal computers.  The numbers of behaviors that people could be engaged in while driving has simply expanded to mind-boggling extremes.

This summer, make a resolution to minimize cell phone use behind the wheel.  Switch off your cell phone when you get into the car.  Encourage friends and family members to do the same.  If you’re the parent of a teenage motorist, you have a special duty to practice responsible driving.
