Bicycles Recalled Due to Bicycle Chain Break

Approximately 91,000 bicycles are being recalled due to risks of bicycle chain break, causing the bicyclist to fall.  The recall is being announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the company that distributes the bicycle, Bridgeway International of Naples.

The bicycles were manufactured in China.  According to Bridgeway International, the fault lies with the chain of the bicycle, which can break when the bicycle is in motion, posing a serious hazard to the bicyclist.  Approximately 91,000 bicycles are included in the recall.  Bridgeway International has at least 11 confirmed reports and nine reports of injuries from such incidents.  The bicyclists in these cases suffered lacerations and conclusions.

Bridgeway International is offering owners free bike repairs.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission is advising persons who own these bicycles to contact the company for their repairs.

Few people have as serious a risk of catastrophic injuries or death in an accident as a bicyclist.  Bicyclists and pedestrians have very little protection in the event of an accident, and this exposes them to the risk of serious, life-threatening injuries.  Even a bicyclist who is wearing a helmet may not be immune to the risk of a traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury in an accident.  A helmet is simply no protection when a bicyclist is pitted against a car, truck or even a motorcycle.

The most serious kinds of injuries in a bicycle accident are head trauma leading to brain injury, spinal cord injury, and fractures.  A bicyclist may suffer road rash or severe abrasions on his limbs.  These abrasions can become infected, and can take very long to heal.  Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear appropriately covered clothing to reduce the risks of suffering road rash. A bicyclist’s gear however, is designed not to protect, but to increase speed and convenience.

Most bicycle accidents that Los Angeles bicycle accident lawyers come across are the result of driver negligence.  In California, many motorists fail to look out for bicyclists or fail to respect bicyclist rights.  Additionally, bicyclists may be subjected to harassment and abusive behavior, yelling and taunts, which can distract them and increase the risk of an accident.

Many bicycle accidents occur because of defective road conditions.  Potholes and obstructions may not matter much, but can quickly turn into a question of life and death for bicyclists.  Bicycle accidents can also be traced to poor maintenance of a bicycle, or a defective bicycle.  Defective parts, like a chain that can come loose, can place a bicyclist at a serious risk of being thrown off the bicycle resulting in injuries.  In fact, one of the biggest pieces of advice that Los Angeles bicycle accident lawyers would give any budding bicyclist is to make sure that the bicycle is well maintained and is in perfect condition, before using it.
