Automatic Braking Systems Might Reduce Low-Speed Rear End Crashes

New Automatic Braking Systems might help reduce low speed crashes.

Vehicles equipped with Volvo’s automatic braking system are involved in fewer low-speed accidents, than those vehicles that are not equipped with these systems.  A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety explores another technology that promises to reduce the risk of accidents and keep motorists safer.

Volvo’s technology is called City Safety automatic braking system.  It is based on sensors built into the windshield.  These sensors trigger a braking mechanism to automatically bring the vehicle to a stop to prevent low-speed accidents.  These are the kind of rear-ender accidents that often occur in typical commuter traffic in Los Angeles.  That’s the reason why Los Angeles car accident attorneys are very intrigued about the possibility for preventing such accidents.

The kind of low-speed rear-ender accidents that we often see on California’s notoriously congested streets, actually dropped with the use of the Volvo technology.  According to the study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, vehicles that were equipped with the Volvo automatic braking system were less likely to be involved in accidents than those that were not equipped with the system.  In fact, there were up to 27% fewer accidents, going by State Farm insurance claims filed by drivers of the car XC 60, compared to drivers of other cars.  The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that it is the first time it is looking at crash avoidance technologies like these, and defines the results as very encouraging.

However, the technology is not meant to be used on vehicles that are traveling at more than 90 mph.  When the difference between two vehicles is 9 mph, the technology can prevent an accident, and when there is a great difference in the speed of the two vehicles, the impact of the accident can be minimized, thereby minimizing the impact of injuries.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also noted the successful results of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study into these collision avoidance systems.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also confirmed that it is conducting its own research into other forward collision warning systems.
