Antilock Braking Systems Can Help Prevent Motorcycle Accidents

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been a strong promoter of the use of antilock braking systems on motorcycles to reduce the risk of certain types of accidents.

Now, the Insurance Institute has released a brochure aimed at helping motorcyclists understand the benefits of driving motorcycles with antilock braking systems.

The brochure is titled Motorcycle ABS: Why You Want to Ride with It, and provides motorcyclists a list of the kind of benefits they can expect if they are riding a motorcycle that comes with an antilock braking system.  An antilock braking system can help prevent the kind of accidents that result when a motorcyclist brakes at high-speed.    Motorcycles have separate controls for both front and rear wheels.  When the motorcyclist slams on the brakes, one of the wheels can lock.  In such cases, a motorcyclist can fall off.

Any motorcyclist may be susceptible to these kinds of accidents.  There is very little that a motorcyclist can do when the wheels lock.  Anti-lock braking systems help prevent the types of fall accidents that result from such situations.  According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in the year 2009, more than 2,000 people died in motorcycle accidents.  Those fatality numbers could have been lower if all motorcycles came with antilock braking systems.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there are certain proven benefits of installation of anti-lock braking systems on motorcycles.  Some estimates hold that the risk of dying in a motorcycle accident is about 37% lower when the motorcycle is equipped with antilock braking systems.  That data is from an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study earlier  this year.  Additionally, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that there are fewer motorcycle accident claims filed when motorcycles come with antilock braking systems.  In fact, the number of claims filed is 22% lower when motorcycles come with antilock braking systems.

Antilock braking systems can benefit both novice as well as professional drivers.  Both these types of drivers have been found to stop more quickly when a motorcycle comes with an anti lock braking system.  Stopping distances improve significantly on both wet and dry surfaces.

A few motorcycle manufacturers like BMW have begun offering antilock brake systems on most motorcycle models.  However, these are still optional features.  The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to mandate anti lock braking systems on all motorcycles.  Until the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration chooses to do so, Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyers advise motorcyclists to invest in an antilock brake system for motorcycles.  It’s a small price to pay for your life.
