Antilock Brakes Would Help Reduce Motorcycle Accident Injuries

Antilock braking technology for motorcycles has been available for a while now.  However, motorcycle manufacturers have not exactly raced to mandate these technologies in their vehicles.  Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyers believe this is at least part of the reason why there has been little decline in Motorcycle Accident Injuries.

Unlike the auto industry, which has invested heavily in developing safety technologies for automobiles, motorcycle manufacturers have lagged behind in offering even some basic accident prevention technologies.  While the average American consumer has a plethora of choices when it comes to safety devices, from electronic stability control systems and side airbags to lane departure warning systems and forward collision warning systems, motorcycle buyers have a limited choice.

Antilock braking systems would help lower serious motorcycle accident rates and save lives every year is antilock braking systems. There are studies to show that antilock brakes can help reduce the risks of an accident.  These braking systems are designed to prevent the wheels from locking when the motorcyclist applies the brakes at high speeds.  When the wheels lock, the motorcyclist may be thrown off the motorcycle, placing him at a high risk of serious injuries.  These injuries can even be fatal.  With antilock braking systems, much of the risk of these accidents could be removed.

Unfortunately, motorcycle manufacturers have not shown much initiative in making these devices available on all their motorcycles.  Earlier this year, BMW announced that it would make antilock brakes mandatory free on its motorcycles beginning from next year.  While that is great news, it has been disappointing to Los Angeles motorcycle accident attorneys to note that none of the other manufacturers have come forward with similar initiatives.

It’s disappointing that motorcycle manufacturers have not prioritized motorcyclist safety.  Motorcycle manufacturers believe that there is little demand for these safety devices. The situation is similar to the one we saw in auto safety a few decades ago, when automakers were loath to offer any safety devices in their cars, because they believed there would be no demand for such devices.  Cut to a few decades later, and few American motorists would buy a car that does not come with electronic stability control systems or even side airbags.

It’s not just the lack of safety devices that leads to high accident fatality rates.  It’s also the fact that motorcycle safety doesn’t seem to be such a priority issue.  Most states have mandated seatbelt laws in place for all drivers and front seat passengers of a vehicle.  However, there are many states that don’t have mandatory helmet laws for motorcyclists, in spite of the fact that they may be at a high risk of motorcycle accident injuries.
