Drivers Who See Cars As Extensions of Self Identity More Prone to Aggressive Driving Behavior

Two studies found that people who look at their car as an extension of their own personality

According to a study, drivers who see their cars as extensions of themselves are much more likely to indulge in aggressive driving behaviors, leading to an accident.  The study provides fascinating new insights into the psychology of aggressive drivers.

The study was conducted by a professor at Temple University Fox School of Business.  The study is titled Excessive Driving: a Consumption Experience, and is believed to be the first such comprehensive study into the psychological makeup of people who exhibit aggressive driving at the wheel.  According to estimates, aggressive driving is linked to approximately 1/3rd of all injurious accidents in the United States.  It is also linked to about two thirds of all accident deaths in the country every year.

There were some facts about aggressive drivers that the researchers were aware of.  For instance, it is no secret to Los Angeles car accident lawyers that male drivers tend to be more prone to aggressive driving than female drivers.  However, the researchers wanted to probe the psychological makeup of these drivers further.  For this reason, they conducted two studies.  They first gathered data through a survey of men and women.  The average age of the subjects in the study was 20.5.  They then conducted another study of 298 people, and added certain risk factors like impulsiveness and risk-taking behavior.

The two studies found that people who look at their car as an extension of their own personality, or a reflection of their self-identity, are much more likely to display aggressive driving behaviors on the road,.  To these people, their cars are extensions of themselves, and therefore need to be protected.  These people are most likely to break traffic laws, causing accidents in the process.

The study also found that materialism was strongly linked to aggressive driving.  Young people are also at a high risk for aggressive driving.  This could be because these people are still in the process of developing their own self-identity.  Additionally, young drivers may be more confident, and not be as aware of the risks of aggressive driving.

People who suffer from compulsive tendencies are more prone to aggressive driving.  People who are struggling under time pressure is may also be at a higher risk of aggressive driving.  Also not surprisingly to Los Angeles car accident lawyers, the study finds that people who admit to aggressive driving also admit to breaking the law on more than one occasion.

Aggressive driving can include a whole range of driving behaviors, including tailgating, speeding, excessive lane changing, and improper passing.  In extreme cases aggressive driving can also translate into road rage, or hostility between motorists.
