37 Fatal Drownings Accidents Across US in 2011

Fatal Drowning Accidents

A drowning can happen any time, never leave a child unsupervised!

Barely 4 months into the year and Los Angeles swimming pool accident lawyers already have reason to be concerned about pool safety this summer.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 37 fatal drowning deaths in 2011.  Besides this, there have been 38 near-drowning incidents recorded from around the country.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning about the increased risk of swimming pool accidents this summer.  The agency has already launched its pool safety campaign, Pool Safety: Simple Steps Save Lives.  The campaign launched with radio and TV public service announcements that will alert Americans to the need for following water safety measures this summer.  The campaign has been launched in partnership with the American Red Cross.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the fact that there have been 37 drownings over the first few weeks of 2011 alone is cause for concern.  According to the agency, the 37 fatal drownings and 38 near-drowning incidents, totaling 75 adverse events in all, occurred within a period of 15 weeks in 2011.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is increasing Americans to stay safe around water at all times, by following as many water safety steps as possible.  You can save lives if you know how to administer CPR, supervise children in the pool at all times, and remain alert around water bodies.

The Pool Safety: Simple Steps Save Lives campaign is based on behavior, knowledge-based and equipment-based actions that can be taken to save lives in swimming pool accidents every year.  Behavioral actions involve personal responsibility and steps that individuals can take to prevent pool accidents.  These include never leaving children unattended in a pool or spa, always supervising children when in a pool or spa, teaching children basic water safety tips, avoiding entrapment hazards by using appropriate pool drain covers.  Any time you’re near a pool, keep a phone nearby.  Avoid keeping water toys in the pool to prevent children from trying to reach the toys.

Knowledge-based actions involve learning measures that can help save lives in pool accidents.  For instance, it’s essential that adults and children learn how to swim.  Adults must also know how to perform CPR on children and adults.  Adults must also be skilled in the basics of saving lives in a pool emergency.

Accidents can also be prevented with the use of the right equipment.  Install a 4-feet fence around the pool.  Install self-closing and self latching gates.  Spread the word about pool safety, and ask neighbors and friends to do the same in their pools.  Use a pool alarm.  Make sure that the pool or spa that you use has a compliant drain covers.  Ensure that there is life saving equipment, like floats and life rings available nearby.
