More health hazards in hospitals as we learn from a recent investigation. Federal inspectors from the Department Of Health and Human Services have reopened an investigation into the approvals granted to medical scanners.  The investigation is based on complaints by Food and Drug Administration scientists, who say that they were pressured to approve some of these high-tech medical scanners in spite of evidence that they could cause harm to patients.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is hosting a webinar to discuss the substantial decline in large truck accidents and fatalities in 2009.  The agency’s Office of Analysis Research and Technology hosted a webinar this week to determine the reasons for this decline.  In 2009, there was a 20% decline in the number of large truck accident-related fatalities.

NHTSA Reports Drop in Distracted Driving Accident Deaths

NHTSA has some shocking statistics regarding distracted driving accidents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported a decline in the number of people killed in distracted driving-related deaths in 2009.  Last year, these accidents kill 5, 474 people and left 448,000 people injured.  That was a decline of about 360 deaths compared to 2008.

What's with the increased amount of bike accidents?

There has been a shocking increase in the number of bicycle accidents in Santa Monica, which has long prided itself on being a city friendly to bicyclists and pedestrians.  According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, in a study of 103 California cities of similar size, Santa Monica ranked at number three in the number of bicycle accident in 2008.  Not only that, the city also saw higher numbers of serious pedestrian accidents in 2008.

The death of a British businessman who owned the company that manufactures Segway scooters this week, has once again underscored the vastly underestimated injury risks from using these high tech devices.  A new study also released this week confirms that persons injured using Segway scooters have a higher chance of being admitted to hospitals, than pedestrians involved in collisions with automobiles.

Food Safety Legislation Would Strengthen Penalties for Violations

Patrick Leahy introduced the Food Safety Accountability Act.

A new piece of legislation just introduced in the U.S. Senate would hold food safety violators accountable for their actions, and would strengthen penalties for these violations.  The bill was introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy Democrat-Vermont, and is called the Food Safety Accountability Act.  The bill will provide for the creation of criminal offenses for any individual or company that knowingly distributes contaminated or dangerous food products.
