New California Bill Seeks to Increase Fines for Cell Phone Violations While Driving

Ever since laws banning text messaging and using hand held cell phones while driving was passed in California, injury lawyers and auto safety groups have complained that the fines are too lenient. However that could change if a new bill passes which is proposing steep fines for violators who use their cell phones to have conversations or text while driving.

Multi Vehicle Accident in Los Angeles Kills One Person

One person has been confirmed dead in a multi vehicle crash involving at least eight vehicles in Los Angeles. The accident occurred on the 101 freeway.   The victim was declared dead at the scene.  Several people have been injured in the crash. The California Highway Patrol says that at least one big rig was involved in the crash.

Woman Killed in Los Angeles Semi Truck Accident

A woman has been killed in a truck accident in Los Angeles, the tragic accident occurred on Monday.  The victim was traveling in a Honda Civic, which was rear ended by the tractor trailer.  The Honda Civic lost control and crashed. The woman inside sustained serious injuries. She was declared dead at the scene.

Driver in Fatal Tracy Drunk Driving Accident Faces Charges

February 24th, 2010

A Tracy man who was involved in a fatal rollover accident that killed one of his passengers will face charges of felony vehicular manslaughter.

The California Highway Patrol has confirmed that it will ask the San Joaquin District Attorney to seek a felony vehicular manslaughter charge and misdemeanor charge for driving under a suspended license. Forty-four year old Horace Booker was driving a Mercedes when it lost control. The car flipped over at least 6 times. The twelve-year-old passenger in the front seat was ejected from the car. He was declared dead at the scene.  Another child in the back seat as well as a female passenger in the car were seriously injured in the crash. Both children in this accident were not wearing seat belts.

Oceanside Man Sentenced in Deadly Drunk Driving Accident

February 24th, 2010

Last December, 24-year-old Michael Wright was driving intoxicated when he crashed his car, killing a little girl in his car.  Wright has now been sentenced to 4 years in prison.

On August 3rd 2009, Wright was driving a Lexus in Oceanside.  He had been to a memorial service with his girlfriend where they had had a few drinks.  As they drove back, with the girlfriend’s nine-year-old daughter in the back seat, Wright crashed the Lexus into two other cars and a truck.   The little girl died at the scene.

DOT Presents Sample Bill to Help States Draft Distracted Driving Legislation
